Ramblings about things

You are not your thoughts

You may have heard the saying "You are not your thoughts" (or a variation of it) in the context of psychology, most likely as an opposing stance to Sigmund Freud's claim that... I'm not even going to pretend to know what he claimed, but the term Freudian slip is a good enough example of what I need to make my point.

Just a refresher, a Freudian slip is a term describing an unintentional slip that reveals subconscious thoughts or feelings. In general use it usually doesn't fit the psychoanalytic definition, but you didn't come here for a psychology lesson anyway.

If you haven't heard the saying, the gist of it is that our thoughts don't define us, nor are they necessarily representative of who we are. Just because you have a negative or an intrusive thought, that doesn't mean anything unless you act on it.

Our thoughts are just that, thoughts. It is the actions that we make (or not) that matter.

But I'm not here to comfort you and tell you it's going to be fine, au contraire1, I'm here to tell you that those thoughts you have mean diddly squat if you don't act on them, and I mean that in a negative way!

When someone asks you to talk about yourself, you will probably find a few things to talk about, e.g. work, hobbies, but there's probably a lot more things that you thought about doing at some point, or things that you think might be worth trying out.

And when you ask someone else to introduce you, they will say that you studied to be a teacher and that you're working in an elementary school, they won't mention that you thought about picking up Spanish, being in a choir or getting a pilot's license.

Hearing someone say "Oh yeah, I thought about eating healthier, but..." while downing a bag of chips won't raise an eyebrow, but your body doesn't care about what you thought, it still has to pump all that salt through the bloodstream as best as it can. But you could help by taking action, choosing what you consume.

"I thought about picking up drawing again, but...", says someone who hasn't held a brush in their hand since elementary school. But you could go to the store, buy a brush, some paint, paper, and actually paint something in probably less than an hour2.

At the end of the day, it's the things we take action on that shape our future.

Take action. Don't just feel good because you had a thought or two about how cool it would be if you knew how to play the piano, and then when you share it with your friends you feel accomplished, when in reality you're still sitting on the couch.

Get busy with what it is you want to do.

Time is running out.

Think about it.3

  1. Pardon my Fr*nch.

  2. It doesn't have to be good, it's art, Monet.

  3. Or do something about it.
